Jesica’s Hope Chest (JHC) is a non-profit foundation for critically ill children who are fully insured, uninsured or underinsured. The foundation was conceived in May 2000 when Mack Mahoney, a custom homebuilder in Louisburg, NC and member of the Franklin County Home Builders Association met a little 14 year old Hispanic girl named Yesica “Jesica” Santillan. Jesica had a serious heart condition called Restrictive Cardiomyopathy and needed a heart and lung transplant within a couple of years, or she would die. It would require more than $500,000.00 to perform this extremely complex surgery and hundreds of thousands more would be needed for medications.
Jesica’s parents had no money, no medical insurance and could not qualify for U.S. government programs. In searching for a way to save Jesica’s life, Mack Mahoney felt that a non-profit organization would be the best way to raise the desperately needed funds. That is when the non-profit corporation Jesica’s Hope Chest, Inc. was formed. Although Jesica lost her fight for life in 2003, her death prompted massive changes in organ transplant procedures and protocol throughout the medical community and gained media attention throughout the world.
One of the major fundraisers of the foundation is “Jesica’s House.” With the help of Mahoney’s sub-contractors, labor is donated and materials for the homes are provided by building suppliers. Local business groups, churches and civic organizations also help raise money for the project.
The 6th “Jesica’s House” is located on Lake Royale in Louisburg, NC. The three-bedroom, two bathroom 1,530 square ft. home is currently on the market for $170,000. All proceeds will go directly to JHC.
