Remodelers Council
For several low-income seniors, life got a little easier in September. The Remodelers Council of the Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County teamed up with the nonprofit organization Resources for Seniors to build ramps for those in need as part of the Ramps for Seniors program. The Remodelers Council built five handicap ramps in one day. Resources for Seniors, founded in 1973, provides a variety of home and community-based services for the elderly. It’s Housing and Home Improvement Program makes minor health and safety-related home repairs and modifications to maximize the independence of disabled and senior adults.
According to program director, Garman Troup, adding handicap ramps to homes is one of the most important accommodations that can be made for the elderly. “When you build someone a ramp, you set them free – they’re no longer prisoners in their own homes,” said Troup.
Kerry Celestini of Habitat for Humanity ReUse Center was the organizer of this year’s Remodelers’ Ramp Blitz. Stock Building Supply and Brooks Building Products donated the materials.
