Several months ago, the Triangle Real Estate and Construction Veterans (TREACV) Board of Directors determined that one of the best ways they could continue to serve would be to build free housing for permanently injured veterans of the current Middle East conflict. Coincidentally, the Home Builders Association (HBA) of Raleigh-Wake County had also entertained similar thoughts with regard to veteran housing. The organizations met and agreed to work collaboratively in this effort, and formed the Military Veterans Task Force (MVTF). The project itself is called “Operation: Coming Home.”
In order to carry out this mission, MVTF brought in the Armed Forces Foundation (AFF) to choose the family that would receive the new home. Joey Bozik, a former Airborne Military Police Sergeant with the 118th MP Company from Fort Bragg is the first severely injured veteran to be honored with a new “Hero’s Home.” Joey sacrificed both legs and one arm in Iraq as a result of a roadside bomb. Joey and his wife Jayme are planning to move into their new home on his “Alive Day” of October 27.
The home is being built by Atreus Homes and Communities and Royal Oaks Building Company, both named 2008 building companies of the year in their given categories by the Home Builders Association and is being built in the Southern Oaks community in Fuquay-Varina. The homesite is being donated by Gaines and Company and Royal Oaks Building Company. The HBA of Raleigh-Wake County has made a cash donation of $25,000 and the Triangle Builders Guild has donated $10,000. Stock Building Supply is a major contributor.
The home is being built with several special features to make life easier for Joey. For example, the home will include radiant heated floors, easy-access cabinets specifically designed for people who use wheelchairs, a sprinkler system and appliances with special hinges that are easy to open and doors with lever handles.
Donations are welcome and there are many sponsorship opportunities available. A website was built for anyone interested in learning more about how to support this distinguished veteran and his family. Please visit www.OperationComingHome.com for more information.
