Locklear Roofing: The V Foundation Charity Home Roofing
By
Jane Shealy
It's personal for Jackie Locklear. Her father, John, founded Locklear Roofing, the family business she now runs, and John died of cancer a few years ago. So, when Jackie was approached about participating in a V Foundation event, she readily agreed. “This was a project we really wanted to be involved with,” she recalls, saying how proud she is that her father's company could help fund research to find a cure for cancer.
Locklear Roofing contributed all the materials and installed the roof on the V Foundation Charity Home. The sale of this year's home, located in the Peninsula at Amberly subdivision in Cary, is expected to bring in about $150,000 for the cancer research foundation.
“We don't use any other roofer,” says Katherine Lusk of 1st American Builders. “Locklear has been our exclusive roofer since they started building. They do a great job at a great price.”
This is the third year that 1st American Builders has teamed up with Locklear Roofing, and Lusk said they will do the same next year and every year thereafter until 1st American reaches its goal of contributing $1 million to the V Foundation. This year's build will bring the company to the $350,000 mark.
For the home, Locklear supplied “heather blend” GAF Timberline 30-year architectural shingles and seamed metal mount siding to add dimension and texture to the contemporary design with Craftsman features. “These dimensional, shingles are more substantial in depth than standard asphalt shingles and give the roof a higher profile,” Locklear says. “They also have a shadow effect and subtle color variations that give the overall roof more interest.”
The home's front porch was topped with seamed metal roofing in a matching pewter-gray shade. While the metal roofing material has the look of an old-fashioned tin roof, the steel is bonded with a zinc alloy that prevents rust. The roofs are strong, resistant to hail or debris damage, Locklear says. “You can even walk on them.”
In addition to its work with the V Foundation, Locklear Roofing is in its fourth year of working with Habitat for Humanity in Chatham, Johnston and Wake counties, installing roofs for free. For all projects, Locklear has set a gold standard for her staff: “the highest quality workmanship possible through consistent and reliable performance.” The mission is to be the most dependable and professional subcontractor on any construction project, providing quality service at a competitive price and warranties on all work.
Based in Apex, Locklear Roofing has installed roofs on scores of residential, commercial and industrial projects throughout the area for more than 30 years. And, it looks as if the company will be around a while longer as a third generation joined the ranks when Locklear’s only son Joshua began working with her. Jackie, Joshua and the staff say they are happy to honor their founder by helping the V Foundation and plan to do so every year.
