Modern Roman Bathhouse
David Fitchett of Carolina Mirror and Glass showcased his talents in a multi-million dollar home designed and built by Bennett Strahan of Strahan Associates, PC. In the photo to the left, the architect’s background in hotel and resort design is evident throughout the house, and the master bath certainly reflects its lavish style.
The vanities, makeup area and ceiling-high cabinets are American cherry, the countertops Italian travertine cream marble. Black sconces set into the custom fit mirror provide the lighting for this area. The arched multi-paned glass door nearby leads to a private patio complete with a hot tub.
A magnificent rounded shower dominates the room. The tall enclosure extends to the high ceiling and is composed of 1/2” thick curved glass which Fitchett had made to the architect’s specifications from a custom template. The enclosure includes two overhead rain showerheads and a wall-mounted handshower, as well as a steam generator, and is tiled with 3/4” cream glass tiles.
The adjacent oval tub is fronted with unique stone panels taken from an old French well. Tennessee orchard dry stacked stone, used throughout the house, fronts the lower part of the shower. Texas cream stone tile cover the floors.
Electronically controlled light settings, alabaster pendants and indirect lighting provide additional ambiance of this spa-like environment, icing on the cake of this fabulous master bath.
Old World Elegance
Gary and Jenny Barnett asked Ryan Williams of R.L. Williams Interior Design to completely renovate the master bath of their MacGregor West home in order to create a spa setting with their eclectic tastes.
Elegant 18”x18” grayish taupe chiseled porcelain tiles cover the floor and extend up the walls to ceiling height. Chocolate brown glass dots are added to the walls for interest, a color picked up by the dark Emperador marble of the oval tub. A cream, yellow and taupe marble medallion dominates the floor and adds to the room’s aura. A deep red velvet bench stands guard over it, dangling its tassels above ornate dark wood legs.
Contemporary wall-mounted faucets hover over travertine marble vessel sinks on dark walnut custom-made his and her vanities bracketing the soaker tub. Aged bronze Mariana sconces light the gold-leafed mirrors above, matching the chandelier hanging from the 20’ ceiling. An antique gold vase holds a beautiful red, pink and coral NDI floral arrangement.
An oversized frameless glass shower fills one corner of the room, its back sides formed of the tiled walls, the floor covered with the same chocolate-toned mosaic tiles used on the tub front. The enclosure houses a double-headed showerhead as well as a wall-mounted handshower, all black powder-coated fixtures as throughout the room.
This impressive master bath competes with any resort spa for luxury and serenity. Its tiled walls exude an Old World tone to the room, yet its contemporary styling is warm and inviting. It truly is a destination room.
Eclectic Modern
Homeowners David and Christie Hadden wanted to gut their bathroom and knock out walls to expand the space in their 30-year-old Hillsborough home. With the facilitation of Frank Doonan of Jade Silk Renovations, the new master bath reflects the earth tones found throughout the home, as well as the eclectic modern tastes of the owners.
Brushed and chiseled travertine natural stone tile from Florida Tile in desert shades of browns and off white cover the floor and the shower walls. An espresso mahogany Mission style vanity chest provided by Kirk Imports Furniture is topped with white marble and has white porcelain under mounted sinks and nickel faucets. Above the vanity are two mirrored cabinets whose dark frames repeat the look of the lower cabinetry. A contemporary metallic silver apothecary chest and mirror, another Kirk Imports piece, serves as the makeup area.
The luxurious shower features an overhead rain showerhead as well as a wall-mounted handshower. Light filters into the shower through a soft green glacier texture glass side panel from Clear-Vue Glass. In the center of the room a black mini-chandelier provides additional lighting, its four frosted candle-style lights and its crystal dangles reflected in a whimsical contemporary mirror.
The homeowner’s accessories compliment the effect of the bathroom features—a long ornately framed mirror reflecting a tall accent table holding a white orchid and a soft white accent rug. All these elements add to the spirit of the spa environment.
Her Private Retreat
Restaurateur Steve Adams and his wife Julie loved the lake setting of a house in Apex so much that they bought it to remodel into the beautiful new home it is today. They called in Eddie Casanave of Distinctive Remodeling, LLC to coordinate the undertaking, including the design of the master suite with his and her bathrooms.
Julie’s bath is her special haven, a room all her own, and a STAR award for Best Bath in its class. The wood floor, the white recessed panel wainscoting, the pale pink walls and the white crown molding set the country ambiance of this feminine bath. The large white retro porcelain tub with iron black ball and claw feet sits across the corner, its lever handled nickel faucet and handshower floor-mounted.
A white rectangular porcelain pedestal sink reinforces the old-fashioned mood set by the tub. A black ladies’ desk becomes a makeup area. An amber glass chandelier, brought from a previous home, combines with overhead spots to provide soft lighting.
An impressive shower fills the corner, its frameless glass door opening into marble tiled space equipped with a rain showerhead and handshower. Above the door a hinged glass window shuts to convert the area into a steam shower.
All the aspects of this unusual bathroom come together for Julie, making this room an expression of her personal wishes, a peaceful sanctuary for hectic days, and an important part of their master suite.
Whether looking for a serene oasis, an elegant room or a spa-like atmosphere, good bathroom design can make this most private space in your home a special retreat from the busy world outside.
