“Battle of the Builders III, ‘Survivor’” was the latest in a series of ‘homes build lives’ events held by the HBA to raise awareness of the positive impact the home building industry has on the Triangle. Supporting the scholarship program and continuing to generate money for it through events such as these allow the HBA to give back to the community.
“We were thrilled at the turnout and participation in ‘Battle of the Builders III,’” said Tim Minton, executive director of the HBA. “We are thankful for the tremendous support from our builders in sponsoring and putting on the event. Raising money for the scholarship program is paramount for us, as students are the future of our industry and of this community. We want to ensure that they have as many skills and opportunities as possible.”
“Battle of the Builders III, ‘Survivor’” was held at Lake Montague in Cary on the site of Montague Builders, member of the HBA. Other sponsors included Stock Building Supply, New Homes & Ideas magazine, American Home Mortgage, Suntrust Mortgage, Locklear Roofing, The Contractor Yard, Crescent Communities and Readlite & Barricade.
The event consisted of 11 builder teams participating in 10 physical and mental challenges, including an obstacle course, gladiator joust, mechanical bull, tiki rock climbing wall, boating, tug of war, donut hole eating contest, speed puzzle, scooter race, building codes and industry quizzes.
Tom Buchanan, known to most as “Big Tom,” from CBS’ Survivor: Africa, presented awards and signed autographs. First place was awarded to Standard Pacific Homes of the Carolinas, and second place went to Perry Builders.
The other teams were Quality Design & Construction, 1st American Builders, JM Davis Custom Homes, Biltmore Homes, HomeScape, Toll Brothers, Lennar, Houseman Custom Homes, Perry Builders, Standard Pacific Homes, and McCar Homes.
The HBA college scholarship program offers scholarships to Wake County high school students who plan to attend a public college or university in North Carolina, plan to attend Wake Technical College and those who will attend North Carolina State University in an engineering field. For students attending Wake Technical College, the HBA scholarship program is designed to benefit those enrolled in construction and building trades, including electrical and electronics technology, air conditioning, heating, refrigeration, plumbing technology, architectural engineering technology, civil engineering technology and surveying.
Scholarships are given to Wake Technical College students after their first or second year in the program. Granted on the basis of achievement, four were awarded in 2006. This past spring, the HBA awarded 13 scholarships to local high school students. The winners were announced at the HBA’s annual Scholarship Awards Dinner.
Each year, one award is granted to a North Carolina State University student who is a member of the HBA’s Student Chapter. The scholarship is granted on the basis of participation, leadership and work experience. For more information on the HBA of Raleigh-Wake County visit www.hbawake.com.
