Beethoven said it best: “Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life.” So if you’ve gone the typical lengths required to create a soothing outdoor retreat, it would be strange not to include music.
The best thing about music is that it can be enjoyed whether you’re outdoors relaxing alone or with friends. Lisa and Ryan Lynch opened Solid Sound of Raleigh last year and keep busy installing outdoor speakers on terraces, patios, front porches and more.
“One of the things that makes outdoor living more popular these days in regards to music is that as they add technology to electronics, the equipment is now water-resistant and weather- resistant,” says Lynch. “There are also more products on the market in more price ranges and the quality has increased as well. We’ve already installed a few waterproof televisions out by Jacuzzis. We can integrate all the sound if people want that—to flow from the inside to the outside.”
Lisa says the most popular request now is for outdoor speakers on the front porch. Folks are surprised to learn about the variety of speakers available. Many of them are hidden in faux rocks, attach to the house, or come in disguises. One speaker the Lynches commonly use is built into a flower pot. Homeowners love it because it serves two purposes—and the dirt and the water have no adverse effect on the equipment.
“It actually sounds better when you put the plant in because it adds insulation,” Lisa says.
And with the latest technology, having professionally installed speakers added to your outdoor retreat or landscape isn’t nearly as costly as it used to be.
But most clients have such equipment so the Lynches are able to get things working really quickly. In addition to keeping busy with the new business, the Lynches have gotten great customer feedback along the way.
“A lot of our clients tell us they like to be at their houses more after they’ve installed the speakers,” says Lisa. “One of the great things about having outdoor speakers is how relaxing it is. It really allows your home to become more of an experience.”
