In 1792, the state's weary legislators decided to build a capitol in Raleigh when they couldn't make up their minds on anyplace else. A deal was struck with landowner and Revolutionary War veteran Joel Lane to purchase 1,000 acres. Architect William Christmas drew up a simple, grid street plan that placed the Capitol building in the center and four, block-sized parks at the four corners. Only two of the parks, Nash and Moore Square, remain of the four. The third, Northeast Park now contains the beautiful, gingerbread Executive Mansion, the official residence of the Governor of North Carolina, and the fourth, Northwest Park contains a collection of state government buildings.

Commuting
The Triangle is a big place, and we have an honest-to-goodness, stop and roll rush hour. Keep that in mind when you are choosing a home. For easy reference, remember:
It's about 25 minutes driving time between Raleigh and Durham (via I-40 and the Durham Expressway).
It's about 35 minutes from Raleigh to Chapel Hill (via I-40 and NC Highway 54).
It's about 12 minutes from Durham to Chapel Hill (via US15-501).
Definitely add time to these estimates if you're driving during rush hours (7:30-9:00am and 4:00-6:00pm).
