Transform my Brick House into a Stately Stone Home
I’d love to transform my brick house into a stately stone home like the ones I’ve seen being built in my neighborhood. Is that even possible?

Yes, and your home is probably a perfect candidate. Canyon Stone, based in Wake Forest, produces and installs manufactured-stone veneers. According to co-owner Frank Hurst, “the manufactured stone can be applied to any structurally sound surface, and it’s installed directly to a clean, unpainted and untreated surface such as brick, block or concrete.”
“Depending on various factors, it’s possible for the entire house to be done in a week’s time,” said Hurst. A manufactured stone veneer is also inexpensive compared to real stone, thanks to its lighter weight and easier, simpler installation.
Canyon Stone’s products, which carry a 50-year warranty, are available in a wide variety of styles and colors. There is a reason they look like real rocks: The molds that they are cast from were made from natural stones found in riverbeds and mountain streams. “That’s how we are able to replicate the detail and the intricacies, the perfections and imperfections that nature has to offer,” said Hurst.
The company’s 20,000-square-foot Triangle location includes a manufacturing facility and a showroom where homeowners can peruse all the different choices. “People are very impressed with what their options are,” said Hurst. The company, which began in Kansas, just opened its second location here in February. “In this area ledge stone is the most popular style,” Hurst said.
A growing trend is mixing various types of stones; for example, the company does an “80/20 mix,” which is 80 percent ledge stone and 20 percent fieldstone. And if you really love the look of stone, carry it indoors too. In addition to exterior veneers, Canyon Stone can also install a manufactured-stone fireplace.
