It has been suggested that RTP might change it name to the Research Rectangle because of the tremendous growth in the Southwestern Wake County area.
One of the country's fastest growing cities, Cary has grown from a small rural community settled in 1750 to the third largest city in the Triangle. Today Cary is known for planned homes and stylish apartment communities and as a comfortable commute to most areas in the Triangle. Many of the residents work in and around the Research Triangle Park and in all of the other Triangle cities.
Apex got its name because it was the highest point on the Chatham Railroad which ran between Chatham County and Raleigh. It was founded in the late 1860s and incorporated in 1873. Like Cary, it has grown far beyond those early railway beginnings. The location of Apex make it convenient for most Triangle endeavors. Just minutes from the I-440 Beltline and even closer to the office parks in Cary, Apex is an easy commute. The Research Triangle Park is only about 20 minutes down NC Highway 55 and US Highway 64 to the west will take you to Jordan Lake for all kinds of water sports

Drivers License & Auto Tags
New North Carolina residents have 60 days to register their cars and to acquire North Carolina's driver's license. Please note that driver's license offices and car registration facilities are in separate locations. Call the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles at 919-715-7000 to find the ones nearest you. In addition, they also maintain a very informative website where you can search for office locations and download the "Drivers Handbook."

Commuting
The Triangle is a big place, and we have an honest-to-goodness, stop and roll rush hour. Keep that in mind when you are choosing a home. For easy reference, remember:
It's about 25 minutes driving time between Raleigh and Durham (via I-40 and the Durham Expressway).
It's about 35 minutes from Raleigh to Chapel Hill (via I-40 and NC Highway 54).
It's about 12 minutes from Durham to Chapel Hill (via US15-501).
Definitely add time to these estimates if you're driving during rush hours (7:30-9:00am and 4:00-6:00pm).
